The Residences at 1428 Brickell stands out as a testament to Yamal Yidios’s innovative vision. As the driving force behind Ytech, Yidios combines a deep respect for tradition with cutting-edge design principles. In a recent conversation, he shared insights into his design philosophy, revealing how he achieves a harmonious balance between form, function, and innovation.
Q: How do you balance Ytech’s contemporary innovation with historical influences in The Residences at 1428 Brickell?
A design should reflect the essence of its time and place. By honoring the history and context of a location, we create work that feels both relevant and timeless. Our approach combines contemporary innovation with a respect for historical influences. We’ve taken the classic curve and arch and married it with a modern treatment of travertine to create something that feels timeless and solid yet fresh and serene. This balance allows us to create designs that resonate with their environment while pushing the boundaries of creativity. The design of 1428 Brickell is also noted for its discrete presence at street level, created by the lush botanical garden that fronts the building, delivering privacy for residents on the ground floor and a sense of serenity to passersby. This is an excellent example of our work that is both forward-thinking and deeply rooted in its context.
Q: How do you integrate function and form in The Residences at 1428 Brickell?
Our goal is to harmonize form and function in every project and this is intricately linked to our design philosophy. We believe that a space should be visually appealing and serve its intended purpose effectively, but this is more complex than it sounds, as superior execution of one can create a compromised result in the other. This is why we cycle through numerous iterations, refining and elevating the concept. This significant amount of time we dedicate to design and engineering makes our work exceptional and ensures that every design element contributes to both aesthetics and functionality. For example, interior layouts are shaped through extensive solar studies focused on light, livability, and views throughout the year. Floorplans perfectly balance daytime and nighttime areas. The organization and circulation of the residences are optimized to achieve an equilibrium that’s both aesthetically pleasing and functionally superior. The result is an understated elegance and ease of living that feels assured, which is a direct result of the profound thought and planning placed into the project. By achieving this balance, we create environments that are both beautiful and practical.
Q: How do you incorporate innovation into The Residences at 1428 Brickell?
Innovation is a driving force in our architectural approach, while staying grounded in core principles. We constantly explore new ideas and techniques to not only push the boundaries of design but, more importantly, to enhance the human experience. For example, The Residences at 1428 Brickell is the first high-rise residential tower in the world to be partially powered by the sun, significantly reducing the load placed upon local power generation, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 4,700 tons per year while making the building one of the most efficient to operate in the region. By embracing innovation, we create designs that are both forward-thinking and timeless. Another example is the classic posture of 1428 Brickell, which hides our innovative approach to the organization of the building. We shifted the core to the west side, ensuring every residence faces east and eliminating residences that generally would be relegated to inferior western views. This also allowed the creation of expansive terraces and an open floorplan with floor-to-ceiling windows allow the sun to bathe the social areas of a home in natural light throughout the day. We strive to lead the way in creativity and architectural excellence.

Q: What role does attention to detail play in your process?

Every stone, metal, wood, fabric, color, and finish is meticulously curated by us — we won’t tolerate imperfection or a low standard. It’s just how we operate as true excellence is achieved through careful consideration of every detail.
